Formation of District--
With the merger of Punjab hill areas in Himachal Pradesh it was included in Himachal Pradesh as district on 1st November, 1966.

Boundaries-- 
It is bounded on the South West by Una district, on the North-West by district Gurdaspur of Punjab, on the North by Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba districts. On the East by Kullu and Mandi districts.
Hamirpur district comprises its Southern boundary.
